A Biographical Note From John
The black academic frames, which are available now from the studio, were copied from a 19th c. mirror frame that I am very fond of, and have been using since the earliest show in 1995. The hand blown glass has a remarkable optical quality, reproducing the same light that fell on the portraits and still life photographs that I have made. I hoped that the historic frames, in their finished state, would represent the eighteenth and nineteenth c. glass windows in each room of my farmhouse.
It was a big surprise to me when I mounted the first show and realized that when I walked by the frames, they had an enormous amount of motion and life in their reflectivity and waviness. I wanted to share that with the friends and collectors who bring these frames into their homes. Always admiring the photographs of Julia Margaret Cameron, I realized the arch over some of her photographs from the 1860s would be a wonderful way to share with my viewers what I was seeing… Since that time, every picture that I have produced seems to come alive, in a very personal way, when it is seen through that arch.
Each of the photographs offered on this site could include one of these classic frames and a mat with a special arch. It is my hope that you enjoyed this site, which represents the mystery of my memory, where the images occur over and over again, inspired by the great prose of the world; becoming more palpable to me with each passing year.
